Microsoft has no plans to release a new version of IE until the next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, due out in 2006. Still, the Redmond, Washington-based company says it has the option to add features to IE by way of the browser's add-on technology, says Gary Schare, director of Windows product management at Microsoft.

"It is an option for the Internet Explorer team to add functionality in between releases. We do not have specific plans at this point to use it, but it is an option," Schare says. Microsoft's MSN group already uses the add-on mechanism for its MSN Toolbar.

Users long familiar with IE (top) will need to adjust to the new toolbar (bottom), which is not as intuitive,in our opinion.

A large percentage of users may be only semi-aware that alternative web browsers exist. Many users buy their PC from a major retail chain with the operating system pre-installed and know only that if you click on the "blue E" you will gain access to the Web. That "blue E" opens Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and, with it, a plethora of potential security vulnerabilities. Not only is it possible to switch browsers, many experts insist that you must and Firefox is a very good browser to choose.

Now I am using Mozilla Firefox 1.06.
